Being Mama, Get Happy!, Life

Thankful 365 – April 2018

I have been working on this little project since the first of the year and here is Thankful 365 for April.  This was an idea that I saw and decided to try it out for myself.  In order to cultivate a grateful spirit I have written one positive and specific thought for each day.  This will be for an entire year but I will post it at the end of each month.

April 8- I’m thankful for wonderful church services that change lives for the better!

April 9- It was a crazy busy day but I’m thankful I had energy for it. I may not have much left but I got through today and made a big pot of chili for a cozy comfort food. Yum!

April 25- Today I realized that it is entirely possible that I could have ended up childless. I have 3 kids but after a visit to the doctor I fully realized that had I not had children at a younger age time simply would have run out for them. I had a very small window and I took it. I’m so thankful I did!

April 26- Its Thursday and I’m tired but I’m glad to be tired for a reason. I have a family a home and work to do

April 29- Church. My resting place.

April 30- My amazing nephew who turned 16 today!

It was a busy month and as I look into summer it will only get busier.  There is just so much that I am thankful for and it increases daily!

Looking for the good and wishing you the best!

Ice Cream Party

This another one of my projects for 2018. In case you are wondering why in the world I am posting at the end of the month I will give you a quick explanation. Gratitude has been something that I have struggled with. I want to cultivate a thankful heart. In order to focus on the positive I will be posting at the end of each month one positive thought for every day (or nearly every day). My goal is to completely transform my natural inclination to spot the negatives first and replace that with the ability to see the good in every day. Bring on the goodness!

Philippians 4:8

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Thankful 365

pexels-photo-273011.jpegThis post began the first day of 2018. The goal is to keep a “attitude of gratitude” all year long. We all get thankful in November but its a year round life people! I originally intended to post a whole year but that would be one monster post!:0 I’m going to do a daily note and then post at the end of the month instead 🙂

JANUARY 2018

Jan 1 – My husband has the day off. LOVE!

Jan 2- Sold 2 dozen eggs and got a super sweet deal on some rabbit cages. Also cleaned the chicken coop. Farm livin’ at it’s finest!

Jan 3- My sweet co-worker surprised me with a gift bag for making her lunch yesterday. How nice! I honestly love cooking for people so I’m blessed twice!

Jan 4- Ok, to be honest I forgot..oops! But I know we had a church service that night and I am really thankful for our “home church revival”. I think it’s just what we need to really get things going.

Jan 5- I’m thankful it’s Friday:) also, we now have a play kitchen in the classroom and after studying “community helpers” we have been role playing restaurant /waitress/waiter and the kids LOVE it. Added bonus * they get extra word practice and build vocabulary when they write down food orders. Teacher win!

Jan 6- The day finally came! We have the certificate to prove it! My husband is retired from the National Guard! #sorryunclesamhesminenow

Jan 7- I’m thankful for my kids. This afternoon my daughter had a friend over and all around the house were giggles, giggles, giggles. I love that! As we were getting ready for bed my 8 year old wanted to snuggle and kept saying “I need you, I need you, I need you to love me”. Really, does it get any sweeter than that? No, it doesn’t!

Jan 8- Woke up to a beautiful sun making it’s way over the mountain. I live in a gorgeous valley. #blessed

Jan 9 – My son got into the welding program we were hoping for! I’m thankful he will be getting proper training in something he loves.

Jan 10- The day has just begun but as I looked around my house before leaving for school I was just so glad I get to live where I do. Our farm is a dream come true.

Jan 11- Chicken tacos. #hungrymama

Jan 12- It’s Friday. That’s all.

Jan 13- We are officially starting the kitchen reno today!:DExcited/Nervous

Jan 14 -17- We got a little busy with the kitchen remodel so I missed a couple of days but I am so thankful it went as well as it did! Lots of light and SOOO much easier to clean without the wall in the way!

Jan 20- The kitchen wall is down and the support beam is up! Thankful for a hard working husband. And for girls craft day (I escaped the mess!)

Jan 21- Well, I’m thankful for a God who knows where I’m at. My husband has mild PTSD and though he is able to do all the things that keep a house running our lives have been forever altered by it. I’m glad I serve a God who knows and cares about our struggles. He proved to me again today that I’m still His girl even in times of frustration.

Jan 22- Noah starts welding class! Praying for angels to go with him.

Jan 25- I’m thankful I am home with my little girl…even if she is sick :/

Jan 26- I’m thankful for my silly little students. They are a goofy and fun loving bunch.

Jan 27- I’m thankful for the beautiful new fallen snow. It’s the prettiest thing ever.

Jan 28 – I’m thankful for our houseful today. We have company and its a good thing!:)

Jan 29- I’m thankful for getting a few things crossed off the list and for learning something new. And for my family and teamwork and that I didn’t have any plans today at all. Not one 🙂 #homebody

Jan 30- I’ve had my mind set on a couple of goals and it’s funny how God will use the simplest thing to give you confirmation. #morningroutine #5minuteworkout

Jan 31- I’m and day early but I can’t wait…..I made it ! Budgeting, I mean 🙂 all the way through baby!

What are you thankful for today?

Keep On Singing!

blue-sky-merge-clouds-675977.jpegMany of our friends and family know of my father in law’s recent passing. I’m still experiencing “pockets of grief” now and then.  Like a plane ride that sails smoothly and then out of a clear blue sky you hit a little turbulence.  The other day I was driving and fighting off an ugly cry. I made it through the day just fine but as my little one snuggled up to me for our nightly chat she began to talk about missing our little beagle who passed last year.  Guys, I couldn’t help it. The sneaky tears that I held in slipped out unbidden one after another.  With her worried little face looking into mine, my daughter demanded in a whisper, “Mommy! Don’t cry! Mommy, please don’t cry!”

I wiped my face and then we sang.

“I’m trading my sorrows, I’m trading my pain. I’m laying them down for the joy of the Lord”

As I sang I felt the weight lift and the heartache eased some.  Words and melody wiped a few more minutes away in the passage of time.  Time heals all wounds they say.  As I sang I thought of David before he was king.  He would sing to Saul.  When Saul was tormented, David sang away the troubles of the man he was to replace.  Words and melody wiping away spirits that plagued.

I remember a time when I was scared to death.  I won’t go into detail but we were in a spiritual battle.  I sang “The Name of the Lord is a Strong Tower”. It was the only church song I knew all the words to!  I can’t say that single song won the war that day but we came out victorious in the battle and eventually (after prayer and fasting) won the war too. There is something powerful in our praise.

Keep on singing!

Get Happy!

Thankful

Not very good photos (selfies  weren’t a thing back then) but this was our mission trip to Mexico. (I’m the one in blue at the Tortlleria)

I loved this trip. We saw so many people that were hungry for hope. And they looked to us to provide it. To them we were all prosperous Americans. Whenever I get discouraged about things that are less than perfect in my life I think to this trip and how so many people would love to trade me places.

I remember one particular outing when one of the chaperones took a baby wipe and cleaned the face of a little boy. He was about 3 or 4 and he was mesmerized with this magic little cloth. We were at the “tar paper city” where the word house referred to any type of shelter that was cobbled together with refuse. The chaperone tried to throw the dirty baby wipe away but the little boy clung to his now filthy wipe still in awe of its magic ability to clean without water.

Another side trip took us to the mountains.  We were guests in a small home and our meal was served with extreme pride. A tablespoon of watery beans and a palm sized tortilla made the meal. After dinner we got a small cup of coffee that you could see through. Some were put off by the meal but it would have been rude to refuse such hospitality. After we had left we were told this family most likely had saved up food all week to feed our group. Talk about humbling.

I am blessed, I am thankful and I hope to return someday to be reminded again.

Family, Get Happy!

Choose Joy

IMG_1878

This picture always makes me smile.  My friend Nelli Sudbrock did our portraits a few years back and this one just makes me so happy.  We were goofing around and Nelli had them attack us with kisses and it tickled so bad I couldn’t stop laughing!

Being a mother and a wife can be so tiring at times.  There are things I feel helpless to change and things I wish I had done differently.  There are times I wish I had spoken up and times I wish I had kept silent.  Oh, being human is such hard work!

I often think that if God just made us perfect then we could do things right the first time. No Mistakes! That isn’t the plan though. The plan is that we trust Him. Mistakes and all.

It’s tough trusting when you have lived by staying guarded for so long.  I find that when my trust is weak I can no longer find the joy that I seek.  When my trust is strong I no longer worry about the things I cannot fix.  God will take me through and I will pass the test at hand..if I trust.  I find that joy and trust are joined together for me.  My worry weighs me down but oh the relief that I feel when I just give it to God.

This season of life has made me realize that there simply isn’t time to mess around.  We get one shot at this journey and then we have to stand back and see if we hit the mark. Life can get heavy and we can sag under the load at times.  I’m glad I know where to go when the cares of this life get heavy.

Matthew 11:28-29

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

My little family Fall 2013

So here are four of the reasons I get up each day and face the world.  My sweeties.  I am so thankful for this group right here.  I want to forever be mindful of that.

How many times have I focused on the bad and not seen the good?  Oh, don’t answer that!  I caught myself the other day thinking murderously about how the children leave messes, don’t close the door, are needy, etc.  My mind was a swirl- not a good one.  I felt a small check and in my mind I could hear a voice saying.  “Your children are a blessing in so many ways”.  Thanks God.

Nobody else heard it but it came to my  mind as plainly as if it were spoken.  I love that.  I love that God cares.  He cares about our mommy hearts.  The part that worries and stresses over our babies.  He cares about our everyday needs. A decent shower and not being interrupted in the bathroom to name a couple.  He also cares about how we treat His gifts to us.  Our children.

When your mind is a mess of messes take a little time to reframe it. This is a continued effort in my world as some of us *ahem, ME!* are born with a natural skepticism.  Not always a helpful trait.

As we head into fall and enjoy the cooler temps and cozy fallish things I am going to make a concentrated effort to keep my eyes on the good.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

James 1:17

Things that make me happy

In an effort to be more mindfully thankful I have put together a short list of happy things.  Life isn’t always peachy but I have lots of sweet spots! Here are a few:

My fire place! OOOH the comfort of wood heat cannot be over estimated.  I always hated having wood heat as a kid because it meant more work for us.  Now, I have a strapping young son of my own and the tables have turned- MWAHAHAH!  Seriously, come over here and sit by my fire.  You won’t want to get up.

Kids who like baking are also a win.  Who wouldn’t love sitting by said fire and having on of your very own kiddo serve up a couple of cookies or cinnamon roll to “see if it turned out right”. Yup, I am the official tester.  It’s a tough job 😉

Coffee- dear, sweet, magnificent coffee…

My hubs.  Yes, he is crazy.  Yes, he totally makes me want to smash something on occasion.  He is also one of the most giving and kindest people on the planet.  I’m not even joking.  The man would do anything for anyone- no, you can’t have his number and he will not be available to look at your ceiling fan.  ( I get protective)

The kids- a.k.a. the crazies 🙂 They make my home a wild, hairy mess and I love them.

Monday DIY

IMG_2023

These are my lovelies.  Cute right?  I know, I am blessed!  I love them all but sometimes a mama need her own space!  And spa treatments…

Here is my Monday cure for getting myself prepped and feeling good for the week:

*Hair mask*

1 Tbs conditioner of your choice

1 Tbs oil (olive for thick/dry hair, coconut for finer hair)

1 egg

mix all ingredients and apply to clean WET hair- leave for 30+ minutes and wash as usual

*Face mask*

In a blender mix 2 Tbs oatmeal, 1 Tbs honey and 1Tbs warm water.  You can add extras like bentonite clay or charcoal if you have any of those fancy things.  If not, no biggie.  Blend until it is soupy and apply to clean dry face.  Leave to dry (it’s a thin mix, it won’t take long) Wash face as usual and moisturize!

Also, stop and get your favorite drink while running your Monday errands.  That is a treatment in itself!
